Entry: Slave to the Needles zine Friday, September 24, 2004

Well, as promised, here is a look at the knitting zine that I received in the mail last week. I ordered it through Broken Pencil magazine, which is a Candian publication that covers indy culture and has a large zine review section. I was just thrilled, as you can imagine, to finally find a zine completely devoted to knitting! ^_^

I also received some cool envelopes with the zine. So nice! ^_^ And just look at those drawings!

Slave to the Needles certainly did not disapoint! The zine is full size and filled with interesting articles and very cute illustrations. The zine is put together by Aimee Hagerty, and her (mostly) knitting themed comics are scattered throughout. I especially loved the comic, Catty, which explores the jealously of the author when she teaches her friend to knit, and that friend quickly progresses past her own skills. I love this level of honesty that only a good zine can bring!

Other features of Slave to the Needles include beginner instructions, articles on crocheted bondage gear, vibrator cozies, knitting and feminism, indie rock knitters, and testimonials from non-knitters, patterns for a thong, birth control pill case, mittens, a bachelor tea cozy, legwarmers, and how to make a tassel, reviews of knitting books (complete with hand-drawn illustrations of some of the the books), lists, and more comics. While there were a few things included that were more traditional (like the mittens), the zine definitely shines when it comes to exploring the side of knitting that is left out of most conventional magazines. That personal touch. The challenging, thought-provoking articles. If you like that sort of thing (and since you read knitting blogs, perhaps you do), you should check out a copy of the zine. Issue two, I have been told, is due to be completed this fall sometime.

To order your own copy, send $3 US (to cover printing and shipping) to:

Let Aimee know that I sent you! ^_^ I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.

SttN #3 is available now at Atomic Books (www.atomicbooks.com), and will be in stock next week at Quimby's Bookstore (www.quimbys.com) and Feed Your Head Books (www.feedyourheadbooks.com).

Stay warm up there, and happy knitting.

That's awsome, Deborah! ^_^ Thanks for mentioning my site... I'm just glad to spread the word about the zine.

That's cool that it was featured on T.V., Tallgrrl. I hope it draws a lot of attention to the zine. And knitting culture in general.

Rustle - actually, when ordering zines, it is best to send well-concealed cash. If you must send a check, make sure it is filled out to the creator of the zine, and not the title of the zine, since these are small-scall operations. I would check about checks before sending, if possible.

Hmmm, I don't have an email address for her on hand... I'm not sure that it is listed (I'll check again though...). I'm pretty sure that the zine will be available if you send for it. She was on her third printing and the second issue is just about ready, so if you send her some money, I'm sure she will hook you up with a zine or two. If not, I'll sure you'll be refunded somehow. Zinesters are generally pretty reliable folk, I find. You could always send a postcard with your question... but that's just me speaking as a mail artist. You probably crave the speed and convenience of email over the thrilling uncertainty of land mail. ^_^ I'll look into it, but I think that you'd be pretty safe in just sending for a copy.
